Add a host filter

On this page

A host filter gives one host its own entry in the sidebar, with its own request count. Every rule belongs to a host filter and applies to that host only.

Add a host filter

  1. Choose File ▸ New Host Filter…, or press ⌘⇧N. Or click + in the toolbar and choose Add a Host Filter.
  2. In the "New Host Filter" sheet, choose the Protocol: HTTPS or HTTP. The choice does not narrow the filter: it lists the host's http:// and https:// requests alike, and its rules apply to both.
  3. Type the Hostname, such as api.example.com.
  4. Click Add.

The host appears under Filters in the sidebar. Type the bare host name only. It must contain a dot, so the sheet does not accept localhost. The sheet shows a message under the field when it cannot add the host:

  • "Enter a hostname such as api.example.com — no scheme, port or path."
  • "That host is already in the sidebar."

What a host filter changes

  • The traffic list. Select the host filter in the sidebar to see only requests to that host. The host menu in the toolbar switches between sidebar entries too. A search then applies within that host. A request to the host on another port, such as api.example.com:8443, is listed only under All traffic, although the host filter's rules still apply to it.
  • The rules pane. It lists only the rules that belong to the selected host filter. A rule you create while the host filter is selected belongs to it. With All traffic selected, the pane lists every rule, and you cannot create a new one there. Which entry you select changes only what the pane lists: a rule applies to requests to its host whatever the sidebar has selected. See Change requests and responses with rules.
  • How much is kept. Each host filter keeps its own 5,000 most recent requests, separate from All traffic. See Read the traffic list.

A host filter does not change what ReqRes captures.

Delete a host filter

  1. Right-click the host filter in the sidebar.
  2. Choose Delete host....
  3. Read the "Delete Host Filter" alert, then click Delete.

Select Don't ask again before you click Delete, and ReqRes deletes the next host filter without asking. To bring the alert back, click Settings ▸ General ▸ Confirmations ▸ Reset All Warnings.

The free limit

The free version includes 2 host filters. When you already have 2, the sheet shows "The free version includes two host filters. Upgrade for unlimited filters." with an Upgrade… button, and Add stays unavailable.

Pro has no limit on host filters. Free version and Pro lists the other limits.
