Menus and the menu bar item
On this page
This page lists what each ReqRes menu holds, what the menu bar icon shows, and what its menu does.
App menus

| Edit | Find (⌘F) |
| View | The sidebar toggle (⌃⌘S) |

- After the first update check, Check for Updates... shows "Last checked:" and the date below it.
- Start Capturing changes to Stop Capturing while capture runs. It is dimmed while capture starts or stops.
- Diagnose Setup… names the first thing that stops capture. See Run Diagnose Setup.
- Install CA Certificate... opens Settings ▸ Certificate. See Trust the ReqRes certificate.
- ReqRes Help opens the in-app Help, with 11 topics in its sidebar. Supported Protocols lists what ReqRes captures for each protocol. See Supported protocols.
- The menus hold standard macOS items as well, such as Quit ReqRes and Close.
Toolbar overflow
When the window is too narrow for the whole toolbar, items move into the » menu at its right end. Each folded item keeps its actions there:
| Row | Holds |
|---|---|
| Host | Your host filters. Choose one to show its traffic. |
| Add | Add a Host Filter and Create an Override |
| Capture | Start or Pause Capture |
| Tools | Show Destinations, Clear Captured Traffic and Send Feedback |
Search, and Free HTTPS Inspections in the free version, can fold into the menu too. Their rows have no actions.
The + button in the toolbar opens the same Add a Host Filter and Create an Override items.
The traffic list header
You can resize the Method, App, Destination, Time and Duration columns by dragging the divider in the header. To put a column back, double-click its divider. To put all of them back, right-click the header and choose Reset Column Widths.
The menu bar icon
While ReqRes runs, its icon in the menu bar shows the capture state. Closing the main window does not stop capture, so the icon is how you see whether ReqRes is still decrypting your HTTPS traffic.
| Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A filled circle | Capture is running. It stays while ReqRes reconnects to a capture that kept running without it. |
| A ring with a dot in the middle | Capture is off. |
| An exclamation mark in a filled circle | A breakpoint is holding one or more requests. |
| A warning triangle | Setup needs attention: the network extension is not ready. It also shows while capture is on but not reaching ReqRes. |
| Any of these, dimmed | Capture is starting or stopping. |
When more than one state applies, held requests come first, then a setup problem, then capture. VoiceOver reads the state in words, such as "ReqRes: capturing".
The menu bar menu
Click the icon to open its menu. The rows, from top to bottom:
| Row | When it shows | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| The status line | Always | Says "Capturing — since 14:02", "Not capturing", "Starting or stopping capture", "Setup needs attention", "Reconnecting to the running capture…", "Capture is on but not reaching ReqRes", "Another copy of ReqRes holds this capture's connection", or how many requests are held. You cannot click it. |
| Start Capturing or Stop Capturing | Always. Dimmed while capture starts or stops. | Starts or stops capture. ⌘⇧C. |
| Restart Capture | While capture is on but not reaching ReqRes | Stops capture and starts it again, so the extension connects to this copy of ReqRes. |
| "2 requests held — 41s left" | While a breakpoint holds requests | Shows how many are held and the shortest time left. |
| Resume All | While a breakpoint holds requests | Sends every held request on, unchanged. |
| "Claude Code connected" | While an agent uses the MCP server | Names the agent. |
| Turn Off Bridge | While Enable the AI bridge is on | Turns the MCP server off and cancels any agent change that waits for your approval. |
| Open ReqRes | Always | Brings the main window to the front, or opens it again. |
| Diagnose Setup… | While setup needs attention | Runs the setup checks. |
| Settings… | Always | Opens Settings. |
| Quit ReqRes | Always. Reads "Quit ReqRes (stops capture)" while capture runs. | Quits ReqRes. While capture runs, ReqRes asks first. ⌘Q. |
- The menu shows states and counts only. It never shows a host or a URL.
- Turn Off Bridge also turns off Settings ▸ MCP ▸ Enable the AI bridge. Turn that switch on again to reconnect an agent. See Connect an AI agent.
- A held request resumes unchanged when its time runs out. See Hold a request with a breakpoint.
Hide the icon
The icon is on by default. To hide it:
- Open Settings ▸ General.
- Under Menu Bar, turn off Show ReqRes in the menu bar.
You can also hold ⌘ and drag the icon out of the menu bar. That turns the same setting off. To bring the icon back, turn Show ReqRes in the menu bar on again.
