Move your license to another Mac

On this page

A license covers 1 person on up to 2 Macs activated at once. When both places are taken, a third Mac answers "Device limit reached (2/2)" and names the remedies: Deactivate this Mac in Settings ▸ License on another Mac, or the license page at reqresapp.com/license, where a key bought at reqresapp.com can also add licenses. This page shows how to free a place, how to get your key again, and what the online check does.

How Macs count

  • Activating ties the license to the Mac's serial number. The Mac keeps its place until it is removed, whether or not ReqRes is running on it.
  • The same Mac never takes a second place. After you reinstall ReqRes or macOS, activating again keeps the place it had.
  • A virtual machine has its own serial number and counts as a Mac.
  • An order for several licenses is 1 key with 2 Macs per license: a 5-license key is for 5 people and up to 10 Macs.
  • With a license, Settings ▸ License shows how many Macs use it next to Macs in use, for example "1 of 2".

Remove a Mac on the license page

The license page at reqresapp.com/license/ works in any browser and needs no account.

  1. Enter the email address you bought with, or the order ID from your receipt, and click Manage my Macs. The page answers the same way whether or not it finds a match.
  2. Open the email and click the sign-in link. It works once and for 30 minutes.
  3. Click Continue on the page that opens. It lists each license, the Macs activated on it and when each Mac was last seen.
  4. Click Remove next to the Mac, then Remove this Mac.
  5. Activate on the new Mac.

Let an idle Mac release itself

When the license is full and 1 of its Macs has not checked in for more than 30 days, activating a new Mac takes that place without a visit to the license page. ReqRes releases at most 1 Mac per license every 30 days this way, so 2 Macs in regular use never push each other off. The released Mac returns to the free version at its next check, and it can activate again once a place is free.

Deactivate from the old Mac

In Settings ▸ License, click Deactivate this Mac…. ReqRes asks "Deactivate ReqRes on this Mac?" first; click Deactivate. Deactivating frees the place from the Mac itself and forgets the key on it, and the Mac returns to the free version. Manage your Macs… opens the license page. ReqRes 1.0 has neither button: use the license page.

Get your key again

On reqresapp.com/license/, enter the email address you bought with, or your order ID, and click Email me my license key. The key always goes to the email address on the order, so an order ID alone cannot reveal it to someone else. The page that opened after checkout also shows the key for 24 hours.

If that mailbox is gone, write to [email protected] with the order ID or your receipt.

The online check

  • Activation needs an internet connection.
  • ReqRes checks the license online when it opens and about once a day while it runs. The check sends your license key and your Mac's serial number to reqresapp.com; see Data and privacy.
  • From ReqRes 1.1.x, Pro stays on for 30 days after the last successful check, so a week without a network changes nothing. After 30 days without one, ReqRes uses the free version's limits until a check succeeds.
  • Before that update, ReqRes keeps Pro only while the check succeeds: with no connection, or after the Mac was removed from the license, it uses the free version's limits until the next successful check. The key stays entered.
