Keyboard shortcuts
On this page
ReqRes uses the standard macOS shortcuts plus the ones on this page.
Main window
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| ⌘⇧C | Starts or stops capture: Capture ▸ Start Capturing or Stop Capturing. |
| ⌘⇧N | Adds a host filter: File ▸ New Host Filter… |
| ⌘⇧R | Creates a rule: File ▸ New Override… |
| ⌘F | Moves to the search field: Edit ▸ Find. |
| ⌃⌘S | Shows or hides the sidebar. |
- ⌘⇧C does nothing while capture is starting or stopping.
- The menu bar menu lists ⌘⇧C next to Start Capturing and Stop Capturing as well.
- With All traffic selected, the New Override sheet asks you to select a host filter first. Change requests and responses with rules explains rule modes.
In the traffic list
These keys act on the traffic list only while it has the keyboard. Click a request to give it the keyboard. The search field's last Esc, the one that leaves the field, gives it the keyboard too, so a Delete after it removes the selected requests. While you type in the search field, while the sidebar or the rules pane has the keyboard, or in a sheet, an alert or another window, the keys do what that place does. With ⌘, ⌥ or ⌃ held, they are not the list's either.
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Down Arrow Up Arrow | Selects the request below or above the selection. With nothing selected, Down Arrow selects the top request and Up Arrow the bottom one. At either end the selection stays. The inspector shows the request once you stop pressing. In a body you are reading in the inspector, the arrows move the text cursor instead. |
| ⇧Down Arrow ⇧Up Arrow | Grows the selection a request at a time from where it started, or shrinks it on the way back. |
| Delete | Removes the selected requests from the list. ReqRes does not ask first. Forward delete does the same. |
| Esc | Deselects all requests, which closes the inspector. It also works after you click into a body you are reading in the inspector, where Delete removes nothing. |
In the search field
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Down Arrow Up Arrow | Moves through the suggestions. |
| Return | Adds the highlighted suggestion as a token. With no suggestion highlighted, it adds what you typed, such as host:api.example.com, or searches for your text at once. |
| Delete | At the start of the field, selects the last token. Press it again to remove the token. |
| Left Arrow Right Arrow | Moves between tokens after you select one. |
| Esc | Does one thing per press. It deselects a selected token, or closes the suggestions. Otherwise it clears the field, tokens included. In an empty field, it leaves the field. |
| Tab | Leaves the field. |
Search and filter traffic lists the tokens.
Windows and Help
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| ⌘⇧S | Opens the Saved Sessions window: Window ▸ Saved Sessions. |
| ⌘⇧D | Opens the Destinations window: Window ▸ Destinations. |
| ⌘? | Opens the in-app Help: Help ▸ ReqRes Help. |
| ⌘, | Opens Settings: ReqRes ▸ Settings… |
| ⌘W | Closes the window. Capture keeps running. |
| ⌘Q | Quits ReqRes. While capture runs, ReqRes asks "Quit ReqRes and stop capturing?" first. |
In the Saved Sessions window, Delete asks before it deletes the selected saved session, for example "Delete the saved GET to api.example.com?". It leaves the traffic list alone. See Save a session.
In the Destinations window, Esc clears the selected destination.
Sheets and panels
In sheets and alerts, Return presses the default button, and Esc presses the button that cancels:
| Sheet or alert | Return | Esc |
|---|---|---|
| New Host Filter | Add | Cancel |
| New Override and Edit Override | Create or Save | Cancel |
| Request Headers and Response Headers | Done | Cancel |
| "Quit ReqRes and stop capturing?" | Quit and Stop | Cancel |
| Clear Captured Traffic | Clear | Cancel |
| Replace the Old ReqRes Certificate | Replace Old Certificate | Not Now |
| About the ReqRes Certificate | Done | Not set |
| "Port 8034 is in use" | Use Port 8035, or the port it offers | Cancel |
| "Stop recording api.example.com?" | Exclude api.example.com | Cancel |
| ReqRes Pro | Buy a License, except at launch | Continue with Free Version |
| ReqRes Pro, after an activation in it | Done | Done |
| Activate License | Activate | Cancel |
| "Deactivate ReqRes on this Mac?" | Deactivate | Cancel |
| "Couldn't open that link" | Copy Link | OK |
- The port alert appears when another program holds the proxy port as capture starts. It names the port you set. See Change the proxy port.
- "Stop recording" appears after you click the Exclude button on a Failed row, such as Exclude api.example.com…, and names that row's host. See See why a request failed.
- In the ReqRes Pro window, Return presses Buy a License only when you opened the window: from a limit's Upgrade…, the toolbar gauge or Free Version. In the window ReqRes shows at launch, Return does nothing. See Free version and Pro.
- In the Activate License sheet, Esc also stops an activation in progress, and nothing is stored. In Settings ▸ License, Return in the License key field activates the key, and Buy a License has no shortcut.
- "Deactivate ReqRes on this Mac?" appears after you click Deactivate this Mac… in Settings ▸ License. "Couldn't open that link" appears when macOS does not open a link from the ReqRes Pro window, the Activate License sheet or Settings ▸ License. See Move your license to another Mac.
Two panels work differently, because they can appear while you type in another app:
- The approval panel for agent changes never takes the keyboard, so no key answers it. Return does not approve a change, and Esc does not deny one. Answer it with a click. See Approve agent changes.
- The Paused Requests panel takes the keyboard only after you click into one of its fields. No key aborts a held request, and Return presses no button. Once the panel has the keyboard, Esc closes it, and closing it sends every held request on, unchanged. While you edit a field, the first Esc only ends the edit and keeps what you typed. See Hold a request with a breakpoint.
